SO. Crazy coupla’ weeks! As some of you know we decided to relocate the BreakBeatBuddha show & SpiltMilk’s PacJam event this month when the city sorta surprised us by wanting us to jump through a couple more hoops. Okay, so Hallowe’en adventures are still fresh in our blurry memories… and you know what that means. We’re sprinting out the door in a puff of glitter… “QUICK!!! Before the X-mas stuff comes out!”
GUARANTEED if you hit Dressew in the next week you’ll run into at least one of the Sweet Soul girls stocking up while all the costumes are on CRAZY sale…. in fact, we hope to run into you because, OH YEAH, you might wanna get in on some of that for the next Sweet Soul’s DollHouse event (PS: Oktoburlesque was madness, MUCH LOVE to all of you & the CamoBear boyz… it was a truly debaucherous evening and the lederhosen were SO hot I could barely hold in all my beer).
As you may know, this October also marked the 2 year anniversary of the passing of Alexis Mazurin. Beloved friend, brother, son, sasspot, journalist, lover… he was one of the most inspiring and life-giving people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I continue to feel grateful the amazing people he has brought together even from beyond this life….so let’s get ‘em together again.
We feel that it’s only proper for us to honour Alexis by a) having a KICK-ASS party from heaven with costumes & hip-hop & funk & breaks & dancing & joy and love, the way he liked it; and then b) donating the money to a really amazing cause. SO - whether you knew Alexis or just know OF him, start digging for a uniform… sports, fast food, medical, cop, military, private school, construction, fireman, janitor, waitress, waterboy, etc. etc. etc. ANY UNIFORM will do. Mmmm. Uniforms.

THE DETES:
This is the third annual event in Alexis’ name and the last two years have been magical. The first event was held at Open Studios (thanks again to Malcolm, Mario, Ben and all the boyz there) and all proceeds went to the CBC Radio Alexis Mazurin Legacy Fund, which is a scholarship program for aspiring journalists. Last year we donated the
proceeds to CUFA, an organization in Brasil that teaches underpriviledged youth to break, scratch & MC in the hopes that it will keep them off the streets and away from crime.

This year Cherry has selected the Emmanuel Boyz Rescue Centre in Nairobi. The Emmanuel Boyz Rescue Center is a resource for Nairobi’s street kids which number as many as 60,000. Many of them are orphans or come from poor abusive families that cannot or do not want to support them. To survive, many of these youth turn to begging and crime. Many sniff glue or use other drugs to escape their reality and feelings of hopelessness. The Emmanuel Boyz Rescue Centre gives these children hope and a future by helping them kick their drug habits while providing them with a caring place to live, an education and
trade skills.

clearly means DRINKING like CRAZY while bouncing around in revealing

The Detes:
Okay, okay. The sun is kissing our summer goodbye and we’re busy picking up the costume pieces from Burning Mans, Shambles & Soundwaves… but don’t pack ‘em up yet.
It was almost one year ago that a bunch of sequin-happy Sweet Soul chicks busted a whole wack o’ power tools all over a quiet 3500 square foot office/warehouse space just off Main Street. They busted down walls, chain-sawed into drywall and mixed 2 pounds of glitter into fast-drying epoxy. Friends and family helped as we sped through several gallons of pink – and blue, can’t forget the blue- paint. Ahhh, the summer of 2006. Almost seems like yesterday.
It’s been 12 full months since we moved in the tickle trunk and slowly became a new discovery to sasspots everywhere. This year we’re planning on bringing the focus back to the show – next year is Sweet Soul Burlesque’s 5th birthday and we’re proud to be running one of the few underground Burly-Q stages in North America. Starting with the Blue Party, we’re kicking our nights off with a full-length show with some of the most talented tassle twirlers around – plus a few surprises you might not expect.
The Blue Party show will feature 10 year neo-burlesque icon and American Academy of Burlesque founder Miss Indigo Blue; Screaming Chicken founder and Vancouver Burlesque Fest co-producer Melody Mangler; Starlet Harlot femme fatale Farrah Moans – along with a bevy of your favorite Sweet Soul ladies burning up the stage.
Then we’ll dance until the sky turns blue.

So we’ve decided over here in Sweet Soul land that although the dancers and all the girls at Dollhouse get plenty of attention for our - as Malaika calls them - “tittilating assets” - that we ALSO need to put the spotlight on the whole other team from heaven who reign directly at the root of the Sweet Soul “femme-pire”… and that, my friends, is none other than Sweet Soul Designs, aka, the reason I’m not naked 100% of the time (despite my most diligent efforts). This season, the 55-piece Spring/Summer 2007 collection combines kitschy Hawaiian surf, geometric patterns, and Polynesian tattoo inspired graphics infused with Sweet Soul’s signature feminine styling. We’re pumped.
Pumped enough to put on what promises to be one of our most memorable events yet…
For the very first time, we’re proud to present the ladies Sweet Soul Burlesque AND Sweet Soul Designs TOGETHER, modeling the ENTIRE Spring/Summer 2007 line in a fabulous downtown nightclub runway show with great sightlines, visuals and tiki-louge sounds, followed by a special full-length Tiki-themed burlesque show starring ALL 8 Sweet Soul Burlesque stars. Come and forget about hte rain for an evening, enjoy a delicious cocktail, a sprinkling of artwork from one of Vancouver’s finest Tiki/lowbrow artists and flirt with sassy some cabana boys / hula girls serving up chunks of fresh pineapple and tropical leis. MMmmmmmmm.
Come see why we’re pretty proud that Patricia Field and Lisa Kline, who is known for dressing major celebrity hotties, have picked up Sweet Soul items for their boutiques in Melrose and NYC… and see live performances by Cherry OnTop, Cara Milk, Malaika Millions, Jailbait Jenny, Rita Star, Little Miss Risk, Your Little Pony and Crystal Precious, aka yours truly, in our first appearance together since the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival!
